Thai National Elephant Day
is celebrated on March 13th
in honor of the Thai national animal and to shed light
on elephant conservation.
Thai Elephant Day was initiated
by the Thai Elephant Conservation Coordination Subcommittee,
which is a coordinating agency
for government and private organizations working on Thai elephant conservation, the National Identity
Board, and the Office of the Prime Minister. This was because
they saw that if Thai Elephant Day
were established, it would help Thai people become more interested in elephants, love elephants, and cherish elephants, as well as place
more importance on helping
to conserve elephants.
The Subcommittee therefore considered finding an appropriate date. At first, they considere the date on which King Naresuan the Great,
won the elephant duel over the Crown Prince. However, that date had already been used as the Thai Army Day.
They considered other dates
and saw that March 13, the date
on which the National Animal
Selection Committee voted
for the white elephant to be
the symbol of Thailand,
was appropriate. Therefore,
they submitted the resolution
in order to the Cabinet,
with support from the Ministry
of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
The Cabinet resolved on 26 May 1998 to approve 13 March of every year as Thai Elephant Day and announced it in the Prime Minister's Office on 29 May 1998 and published in the Royal Gazette on 18 June 1998
The result of Thailand having
Thai Elephant Day is another recognition of the importance
of animals, in addition to
the honor that elephants have received in the past, whether as white elephants on the national flag or white elephants as a symbol of the country or animals that are a symbol of the King.
